Different Modes of Rayleigh–Bénard Instability in Two- and Three-Dimensional Rectangular Enclosures

چکیده
The article describes a complete numerical solution of a recently formulated benchmark problem devoted to the parametric study of Rayleigh–Bénard instability in rectangular twoand three-dimensional boxes. The solution is carried out by the spectral Galerkin method with globally defined, three-dimensional, divergent-free basis functions, which satisfy all boundary conditions. The general description of these three-dimensional basis functions, which can be used for a rather wide spectrum of problems, is presented. The results of the parametric calculations are presented as neutral curves showing the dependence of the critical Rayleigh number on the aspect ratio of the cavity. The neutral curves consist of several continuous branches, which belong to different modes of the most dangerous perturbation. The patterns of different perturbations are also reported. The results obtained lead to some new conclusions about the patterns of the most dangerous perturbations and about the similarities between twoand three-dimensional models. Some extensions of the considered benchmark problem are discussed. c © 1999 Academic Press

Stochastic bifurcation analysis of Rayleigh–Bénard convection
Stochastic bifurcations and stability of natural convection within two-dimensional square enclosures are investigated by different stochastic modelling approaches. Deterministic stability analysis is carried out first to obtain steady-state solutions and primary bifurcations. It is found that multiple stable steady states coexist, in agreement with recent results, within specific ranges of Rayl...
متن کاملNatural Convection at Different Prandtl Numbers in Rectangular Cavities with a Fin on the Cold Wall
The natural convection in differentially heated rectangular cavities with a fin attached to the cold wall was investigated numerically. The top and the bottom horizontal walls of the cavities were insulated while their left and the right vertical walls were maintained at a constant temperature Th and Tc, respectively with Th > Tc. The governing equations written in terms of the primitive variab...
متن کاملA Modified Hybrid MoM-Modal Method for Shielding Effectiveness Evaluation of Rectangular Enclosures with Multiple Apertures
A new hybrid modal-moment method is proposed to calculate fields penetrated through small apertures on rectangular metallic enclosures. First, the method of moments is used to numerically solve the governing electric field integral equation for the equivalent two-dimensional surface-current distributions on the surface of metallic enclosure including any number of rectangular apertures of arbit...
متن کاملMaxwell and Cattaneo’s Time-Delay Ideas Applied to Shockwaves and the Rayleigh-Bénard Problem
We apply Maxwell and Cattaneo’s relaxation approaches to the analysis of strong shockwaves in a two-dimensional viscous heat-conducting fluid. Good agreement results for reasonable values of Maxwell’s relaxation times. Instability results if the viscous relaxation time is too large. These relaxation terms have negligible effects on slower-paced subsonic problems, as is shown here for two-roll a...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical study on the wavy instability in a Rayleigh-Bénard-Poiseuille flow: non linear effects
A combined experimental and numerical study of a Rayleigh-Bénard-Poiseuille air flow in a rectangular channel is presented. The aim of the present paper is to characterize a secondary instability, referred to as wavy instability and known to be a convective instability, with the objective to identify the best situation for an optimal homogenization of heat transfers in the system. A periodic me...
